GACKT in Favor of Japanese Isolationism Amid Globalization

Japanese musician GACKT posted on X, sharing his thoughts on trade and diplomacy with foreign countries.

GACKT commented, “Starting December 12, the ‘use’ of marijuana will be a crime,” referencing the recently implemented revision of the Cannabis Control Act, which introduced penalties for marijuana use. He observed, “Japan is moving in a direction different from the United States,” and added, “However, this strengthening of the law is simply a matter of Japan clarifying its stance that ‘what is unacceptable remains unacceptable.’ Rules and norms differ from country to country. For example, the Japanese custom of ‘holding a bowl while eating’ is considered polite here but is often seen as ‘rude’ in many other countries. Conversely, things permitted abroad might be forbidden in Japan, and that’s natural.”

He further pointed out, “The reality is that many Japanese people are unaware of global norms, and many foreigners don’t understand Japanese customs.” GACKT emphasized the need for establishing clear guidelines for both parties, stating, “If guidelines remain vague, confusion and issues will only increase. As an alternative, one option might be to close the country off entirely and seek a path to self-sufficiency. Of course, in today’s world, that is nearly impossible. Incidentally, I am in favor of isolationism.” He concluded by asking, “What about you?”
