A woman, Yuri Kawano (40), was arrested for illegally receiving more than 5.55 million yen in welfare payments, effectively defrauding the country.
According to police, Kawano allegedly bought cosmetics from a Korean company and sold them online, earning over 710,000 yen in sales. However, she failed to report this income to the welfare office, while continuing to receive public assistance.
Reports indicate that Kawano applied for welfare to support herself and her son, illegally receiving over two and a half years worth, amounting to over 5.55 million yen.
The case came to light when a staff member of Kokurakita Ward Office noticed and informed police that someone was living at a different address than what was listed on the welfare application.
Kawano denied the charges stating that, “I had income from selling, but I didn’t make a profit, so I didn’t report it.”
