Vietnamese National Fails to Steal Phones, Assaults Customers Instead

On the night of December 16th, a man attempted to steal smartphones from a store in Chikuma City, Nagano Prefecture, and assaulted a customer while fleeing the scene. On the 20th, police arrested a Vietnamese national on suspicion of robbery resulting in injury.

A 32-year-old Vietnamese man with no fixed address, was arrested on charges of robbery causing injury.

According to police, around 6:45 p.m. on the 16th, at the “Geo Koshoku Store” in Kuiseshita, Chikuma City, the man attempted to steal two smartphones from the register counter. He was apprehended by customers and others but assaulted them, punching one in the face and causing injuries, including a split lip, that required one month to heal.

The man then fled the scene, and police pursued him. By interviewing witnesses and analyzing security camera footage, they confirmed the man was at Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture. He was arrested around 2:15 p.m. on the 20th.
