Nguyen The Gia (31), a self-proclaimed company employee residing in Kumamoto Prefecture, Suishi Town. According to the police, Nguyen is suspected of engaging in “white taxi” activity by transporting passengers in his car and receiving payments without proper authorization in July and October of last year.
The police discovered that Nguyen had posted on social media in Vietnamese, listing destinations and asking, “Anyone want a ride?”
During two days of observation, the police determined that Nguyen had transported multiple groups of foreigners, receiving several thousand yen for the rides. Some cases reportedly involved trips to destinations outside the prefecture.
In response to police questioning, Nguyen denied the allegations, stating, “I have given acquaintances rides, but I didn’t take any money.” This is the first time a foreign national has been arrested for “white taxi” activity in Kumamoto Prefecture.
