On July 22, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police announced the arrest of Ryota Hatano, 24, a third-ranked Ground Self-Defense Force sergeant, of Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture, on suspicion of filming sexual acts. Hatano allegedly identified a woman from a video on social media, boarded the bus she was using, and secretly filmed up her skirt. He has admitted to the charges. According to the Ground Self-Defense Force, Hatano is stationed at the Komakado Garrison in Gotemba.
According to the police, on May 28, Hatano allegedly filmed a teenage girl’s skirt from behind with his smartphone on the bus, and shared the photos through social media three times.
The suspect had never met the woman, and he selected a woman he liked from videos posted on social media, found out the nearest station she used and engaged in voyeuristic photography. He was arrested as a result of an investigation into another case.
