The Tokyo Police Department warned a political candidate on June 20 for putting up a poster of a nearly nude woman on a campaign poster board for the Tokyo gubernatorial election, against violating the Nuisance Prevention Ordinance.

The poster contained the words “No more restrictions on freedom of expression” along with an image of a naked woman with her breasts and crotch partially hidden. The candidate displayed several other types of posters featuring women, which were pointed out as being harmful to children.

On the evening of June 20, the police called the candidate to the Tokyo Police headquarters to warn her. She said “I thought it was legal. I would stop immediately if it was illegal.” The candidate’s camp then began removing the posters.
