The president of “Japan Chicken Food Service,” Kenjiro Moriyama (55), and two other executives have been arrested on suspicion of illegally employing a Sri Lankan national without the required work visa for cooking duties at a restaurant in Ebisu, Tokyo.
Kenjiro Moriyama and the other two individuals deny the allegations. However, it has been revealed that at least eight foreign workers engaged in tasks beyond the scope of their permitted activities at the chain.
Some workers were reported to be working over 12 hours a day without a single day off in a month.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police are investigating the case, suspecting that Moriyama and others altered the visa status of foreign nationals who wanted higher incomes, enabling them to work long hours, and then hired them as employees for cooking and other tasks in violation of the law.
