A male English conversation instructor has been arrested on suspicion of breaking into a residential property in Shinjuku ward, Tokyo, with the intention of robbing and injuring the occupants.
The suspect, Otto Daniel Matthew (31) from Australia, is accused of breaking into a single-family home in Shinjuku ward in June and attempting to rob a man in his 70s while threatening him with a knife, resulting in injuries to the victim.
Fortunately, the victim’s injuries were minor.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Mr. Otto arrived in Japan in March of last year and worked as an English conversation instructor. It is reported that he used broken Japanese to threaten the man with phrases like “Kane Aruka?”
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police identified Mr. Otto, who lived about 400 meters away from the crime scene, through surveillance camera footage and other means.
Mr. Otto has denied the allegations, stating, “I haven’t done anything wrong.”
