In a recent crackdown, a 30-year-old Chinese national, Jin Liang, has been arrested for engaging in “white taxi” (unlicensed taxi) activities, where he charged fees to transport Chinese tourists using his private vehicle.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Jin allegedly entered into an agreement with two Chinese tourists in June, receiving payment for chauffeuring them between a hotel in Tokyo’s Minato Ward and the Ginza district. He now faces charges of violating the Road Transport Act.

It was revealed that Jin used Chinese social media platforms to find potential clients, offering trips to popular tourist destinations like Ginza. The agreed-upon fare for the round trip was approximately ¥34,000, which he received in Chinese yuan.

Police officers, alerted by tip-offs, were vigilant and successfully apprehended Jin in the act of conducting unauthorized taxi services.

During questioning, Jin admitted to his involvement, stating that he had been operating the “white taxi” service since the end of 2022. This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts to curb illegal taxi activities targeting tourists in Tokyo.
