A Brazilian National, Leonardo Yoshinaga Arakaki (25), was arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Shinjuku Station on suspicion of stealing a cash-filled safe from a restaurant. He has admitted to the charges.

According to the arrest, around 4:30 p.m. on the 3rd, at a restaurant in Kabukicho, the suspect allegedly took a key from a dial-type key box on the door, entered the premises, and stole a portable safe containing approximately 60,000 yen in cash.

According to the police, Yoshinaga targeted shops that were closed and located in low-traffic areas. After entering, he returned the key to the key box and broke open the safe in a nearby parking lot to steal the cash.

Since the beginning of this year, about ten theft cases involving pried-open key boxes have occurred within the Shinjuku jurisdiction, and the police are investigating possible connections.
