A 22-year-old black man has been arrested in Tachikawa City, Tokyo, for attempting to steal a credit card from an elderly woman in her 80’s.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, the suspect, Hito Waronze, is accused of conspiring with accomplices in December of last year to deceive an 80-year-old woman residing in Tachikawa City through a fake phone call and steal her credit card.

Waronze, posing as a Bank of Japan employee, visited the victim’s home and, while diverting her attention, swapped a fake envelope containing playing cards with another envelope containing the cash card.

The woman, suspicious of Waronze wearing jeans, immediately tore open the envelope, discovering the deception. The incident came to light, and Waronze, returning the envelope to the victim, fled the scene.

During questioning, Waronze admitted to the allegations, stating he was in financial troubles and took on shady scams.
