According to police, at around 3:30 p.m. on the 6th, a 65-year-old South Korean National allegedly stole three cans of tea, with a total retail value of 5,620 yen, from a tea specialty shop inside a department store in Sapporo City.
An employee of the department store witnessed the theft, and when the man stepped outside the building, the employee confronted him and detained him on the spot.
Police say the man may be a tourist.
In questioning, the 65-year-old unemployed man, who claims South Korean Nationality, admitted to the charges, reportedly saying:
“I wanted to use Japanese products and eat them, so I stole.”
The man had no identification on him, and police are continuing to investigate his identity and the details of the crime.
