Chinese National Arrested for Trespassing Into Kyoto Temple

A Chinese National was arrested by Kyoto Prefectural Police’s Ukyo Station on the 3rd for trespassing on temple grounds without a valid reason. The 28-year-old, admitted to the charges, stating, “The gate to the temple, which is a tourist spot, was closed because it was a day off. I knew it was wrong, but I climbed over the wall and entered without permission.”

The arrest allegation is that around 3:30 p.m. on the 2nd, he climbed over the wall of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple in Kyoto City, and trespassed onto the temple grounds.

According to the police, the temple’s head priest spotted the man inside the grounds and called police. The man had been taking commemorative photos inside the grounds with another individual believed to be an accomplice. That other person fled the scene, and police are currently searching for them.
