In Bangkok, Thailand, seven South Koreans—including the owner of an illegal gambling den—and two Thai nationals were arrested by police in a bustling entertainment district.
A South Korean man “A,” and a South Korean woman “B,” were arrested and charged with operating an illegal gambling establishment, while the remaining seven suspects—including a Thai security guard—were arrested and charged with assisting in illegal gambling.
According to police investigations, A secured the gambling location and directed the security guard in managing the operation. B acted as the dealer and used her local bank account to exchange gambling chips for cash.
A claimed that the day of the raid was the first day of operation and that the total amount wagered was approximately 200,000 baht (about 885,000 yen). Police confiscated playing cards, gambling chips, a ledger recording chip exchanges, and 50,000 baht in cash as evidence from the scene.
In Thailand, cases of South Koreans being caught by authorities for running online gambling operations have been on the rise.
In January of this year, two South Koreans were arrested by Thai immigration authorities in Udon Thani, northeastern Thailand, for operating an illegal gambling website targeting South Korean users. In December of last year, 13 South Koreans were arrested in a residential area in Pattaya for running a Korean-language gambling site.
