Two 23-year-old men from Nepal, who were living together in Sapporo, have been arrested on suspicion of violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act for working illegally after dropping out of school despite entering Japan under the pretense of studying abroad.
The two men entered Japan under the purpose of studying abroad, and, while they were permitted to work part-time under this status, it is suspected that they continued working and receiving payment from January to February, after they dropped out of their vocational school.
After dropping out, one of the men was working part-time at a convenience store. When questioned by the police about another incident, he admitted to working part-time, which led to the suspicion.
It was later discovered that the other man also continued working part-time at a restaurant after dropping out, leading to their arrest on March 6.
In their investigation, the two men admitted to the charges, saying, “We knew we were breaking the law” and “We knew it was wrong to skip school and work part-time for a salary.”
