The Wakayama District Court acquitted Saki Sudo, the ex-wife of a wealthy man called ‘Don Juan of Kishu (Wakayama)’, of murdering him.

She was accused of murdering her ex-husband, Kosuke Nozaki, in 2018 after she somehow forced him to take more than a lethal dose of methamphetamine at their home in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture. In previous trials, Sudo pleaded not guilty, saying ‘I didn’t kill him’, whereas the prosecution had sought life imprisonment on the grounds that ‘no one but the defendant could have forced him to ingest methamphetamine in a crime committed for property’.

In a ruling on December 12, the Wakayama District Court acquitted the defendant on the grounds that, although there were suspicious circumstances, such as a large inheritance, that could be a motive, it wasn’t sufficient to infer that the defendant killed the victim, and the possibility that Nozaki accidentally ingested a lethal dose of methamphetamine cannot be ruled out. When Sudo was acquitted by the presiding judge, she fell on her face and wiped her tears with a handkerchief.

Meanwhile, the Wakayama District Public Prosecutor’s Office commented ‘It is regrettable that the prosecution’s arguments were not accepted. We’d like to take appropriate action after carefully examining the content of the verdict and consulting with higher authorities.’
