The Tokyo Government is developing its own dating app. It’s expected to be put into practical use this summer. Many municipalities are working to promote “marriage hunting”‘ against the declining birth rate, but according to the officials, it’s rare that a local authority develops an application. To ensure reliability, the Tokyo Government will require proof of singleness and income.

The officials say, to register, in addition to a photo identification document, a certificate of celibacy must be submitted. A preliminary interview is also required. Fifteen items of personal information, including height, last degree, job, income, etc., must be entered in advance so that the other users can see them. They are considering charging a fee for the service.

As a reason for stricter registration, the city aims to prevent trouble, such as crime and false statements. The officials say that if many people are interested but haven’t been able to get married, we want to support them. We want people to feel safe under the government.

They are also required to provide proof of income. According to a man who is familiar with the app industry, low-income or no-income individuals are generally less likely to be able to form a couple on apps. As for the government’s response, some have pointed out that measures to raise the incomes of low-income earners are needed.

The Tokyo Government has budgeted approximately 200 million yen in FY 2023 and 300 million yen in FY 2024 for marriage promotion projects, including the app development.
