Four Chinese nationals were arrested at a shrine in Nagoya, for posing as a medium, stealing cash and precious jewelry worth 450,000 yen from a woman in her 60’s.

Chinese national Wu Xiaoqiong, 60 and three other suspects are suspected of stealing cash, a necklace and other items worth 450,000 yen from a woman in her 60’s at the Kasuga Shrine in Nagoya in May this year.

According to the police, Wu and the other suspects asked a woman riding a bicycle in a shopping street for directions in Chinese, while another member approached her, made small talk and extracted personal information from her.

A “‘medium”‘ then appeared and pretended to guess the personal information he had obtained, and lied to the woman, saying that she needed to exorcise cash and jewelry if she wanted to save her family, and took her to the shrine and stole cash along with other items entrusted by the woman.

Similar cases have been committed in Osaka and other cities since October last year, with the total damage amounting to more than 120 million yen, with police investigating any connection.
