An 81-year-old woman from Jonanmachi Shimomiyaji, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City, was arrested on the spot for driving a passenger car under the influence of alcohol late in the evening on the 16th.
Toshiko Yamada, an unemployed resident of the same area, is suspected of driving a regular passenger car while under the influence of alcohol on a municipal road near her home around 11:40 PM on the 16th.
Just prior to this, Yamada’s car was witnessed colliding with the wall of a private residence and a vending machine, after which she was seen fleeing the scene. The police, responding to a report, found the car nearby. Yamada, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested on the spot as a breathalyzer test showed alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.
During the investigation, Yamada admitted to the charges, and the police are also conducting further inquiries into the suspicion of hit and run.
